Beabadoobee - Beatopia
Album Review
Reviewers Note: My final previously written review! It's actually the first in theory. This one, like the Expert In a Dying Field one was written for the Twenty One Pilots Discord Album Of The Week, so like that review, character limits do apply here too. I'm very not proud of this review actually but why not publish it, right?Starting her career with a bedroom pop sound, then pivoting to a 90's rock on her first, Fake It Flowers. Filipina Beatrice Kristi (Beabadoobee) mixes both sounds on her 2nd full LP Beatopia. Conceptually, the album explores a deep part of Beatrice's psyche, and looks at themes she was avoiding for most of her life, such as her emotional dependence, drug usage and how she apparently thinks Tinkerbell is overrated. Lyrical themes can be all over the place, and that's also on theme. A person's psyche may not always be logical, after all.
This imaginary world of Beatrice is well represented in dissonant, illogical but really cool production choices by the album's producer, Jacob Bugden, that brings her imaginary world to life, that in songs like Sunny Day, broken cd and The 1975s Matt Healy's produced Pictures of Us you can really feel the whole vibe of the album. Another point in the production that has to be highlighted is the phenomenal string arrangements by Bugden, that fit perfectly in songs like Ripples and the perfect pair (absolute best song in the album). The return of the distorted guitars in 10:36 and Talk, and Beatrice's voice that, although not as challenging and not reaching as high notes, still perfectly fit the energy that was required of her.
On a final note, the record doesn't have anything necessarily ground breaking, it's not mind blowing by any means, but it's an intimate and varied experience, that with every song takes you to a special place. With time it gained a special place in my heart and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too!
Favourite Tracks: 10:36, Sunny Day, See you Soon, the perfect pair, Don't get the deal, tinkerbell is overrated
